　　据《美国地域英语词典》（The Dictionary of American Regional English）记载，bread and butter是两个人一起走路忽然被别人或某件东西分开时所使用的感叹词。如果一对情侣在林荫道上携手漫步，突然一个莽撞的小孩从他们中间跑过去，冲散了二人，那女友可能就会娇嗔地要求男友：“快说bread and butter！”这句简单的补救语也许蕴涵着这样的祈望：“我们会像面包加黄油那样永不分离。”

　　《美国地域英语词典》上引用的例句源自1939年出版的《堪萨斯州指南》，该书将bread and butter描述成当地学生中很流行的一种迷信说法。既然1939年该短语已经很普遍了，那么它的历史很可能更悠久，至少可以追溯到19世纪。

　　不过，bread and butter并未在牛津大学出版社1959年出版的《学生的学问及语言》中出现。由于该书只涉及到不列颠群岛地区，所以bread and butter很可能是美国人自创的。
